Genetic Engineering for the Improvement of Forage Grass Quality
نویسنده
چکیده
The forage quality of warm season perennial grasses grown in the Southern States, subtropics, and the tropics is often inadequate and is a major limitation to satisfactory animal performance. Quality improvement of those warm season grasses has been a high priority research objective in breeding programs. Hammond (1987) pointed out that C4 tropical and subtropical grasses generally have lower quality than the C3 temperate grasses. A major problem with those grasses is that they have proportionately higher cell wall constituents than cool season grasses, and this generally correlates negatively to intake (Waldo 1985), digestibility and animal performance (Moore and Mott, 1973; Van Soest, 1978; Morris, 1984). Cell wall digestibility decreases rapidly with increasing maturity and is reduced further by higher growth temperatures as encountered in the south and the tropics (Morris, 1984). It is also well established that forage grass leaves have a much higher digestibility than stems.

Evaluation of Genetic Diversity and Estimation of Heritability and Genetic Correlation Using REML for Different Traits in Grass Pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) Genotypes
Plant breeding researches is based on genetic diversity and evaluation of genetic diversity is also one of the most important steps in introduction of new cultivars. In this study, genetic diversity of 25 grass pea genotypes was studied based on randomized complete block design with three replicates in Khorramabad (Iran). Analysis of variance showed significant differences among genotypes for m...

In order to evaluate the forage quality in grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) intercropping with application of mycorrhiza fungus (Glomus intraradices), a field experiment was carried out as a randomized complete blocks design (RCBD) with 10 treatments and 3 replications at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Maragheh, Iran during 2017 growing season. Treatments i...

Abstract. Information on forage quality in phenological stage could help range managers to choose suitable grazing method to achieve higher animal performance without detriment to vegetation. Vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides) is a non-native perennial grass that was introduced to the Iran in 2008. This plant is a multi use species that could be considered from different viewpoints. Thus, it...

Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum Schumach.) is a fast-growing perennial grass native to Sub-Saharan Africa that is widely grown across the tropical and subtropical regions of the world. It is a multipurpose forage crop, primarily used to feed cattle in cut and carry feeding systems. Characterization and diversity studies on a small collection of Napier grasses have identified a moderate level...

Chemical assessments of forage clearly determine the forage quality; however, traditional methods of analysis are somehow time consuming, costly, and technically demanding. Near Infrared Reflectance Spectroscopy (NIRS) has been reported as a method for evaluating chemical composition of agriculture products, food, and forage and has several advantages over chemical analyses such as conducting c...
